After our engagement at the Cedars, we went to the Tarman's house where Hilary, Jovanni, Jess and SUSANNA met us! I couldn't believe David arranged for Susanna to be at the house upon our arrival--- I had just gotten off the phone with her, telling her the news and as we walked inside the Tarman's house, there she was with the rest of my friends! To have Susanna there was very encouraging and stabilizing. I've only been in DC for 2 years and she has been apart of my life for the past eleven years which somehow brought a sense of reality and security. didn't feel so far from home and away from family.

i'm simple and complex. i see the positive in people, yet i am familiar with the selfish desires within each person. i have a lot of hope for transformation in people, in cities, in countries and in the world. music speaks to my soul when i am contemplative; it sets me free when i sing to the lyrics; it lets me rock when i dance to the beat. i like stylish stuff, but my preference is always comfort. i love to laugh with people. i like to smile and play. i like to look at the intricacies of a flower. i like to pull my car over and take time to walk in tall fields. i feel at home in nature. i like hiking, fishing, rock-climbing, backpacking, and swimming in the ocean, rivers and streams. i love water-- it represents life and largeness to me. i like to live in possibility and see each day as an adventure. i love road trips with friends. i like to stop at gas stations and buy treats- especially hostess cupcakes. driving on a cold night with the windows down and heater blasting is one of my most favorite things. i like to lie on the ground at night and name stars. i like to reflect on the vastness of the skies-- it leads me to consider the creator of all things as loving and gracious. i like to be with people from all walks of life; rich and poor; all sorts of ethnicities. when i visit other countries, states, or cities, i like to sit in a coffee shop and watch the people around me-- somehow i walk away feeling more connected to the people and culture. i love doing life with people, but I cherish the moments of being together more than the doing. overall, i enjoy life and want others to enjoy it. my overarching goal is to love all people and hopefully, in that, I will reveal a love that is deeper and more real than our minds can conceive and this world can offer. my life is a constant lesson in learning to live by faith and not by sight because I know that what I see is temporary and what I don't see is eternal. (2 Cor. 4:18; 5:7) And by the way, when I sing, i sing really loud!

Mindfulness
“…investigating inwardly our own nature as beings and, particularly, the nature of our own minds through careful and systematic self-observation, we may be able to live lives of greater satisfaction, harmony and wisdom. It also offers a view of the world which is complementary to the predominantly reductionist and materialistic one currently dominating Western thought and institutions” (Wherever you go, there you are, Kabbat-Zinn, p. 4)

Our natural tendency is to live self-centered lives, yet true life is not found within oneself, it is found in serving others and loving Jesus. For me to understand this truth, I must search within to become familiar with my nature and know the blinded ways that have a tendency to guide me. I believe this is what the writer of this statement is saying. He is saying take time to know your own perverse ways and your great need for grace and mercy. Take time to know your patterns of selfishness and leanr to undo them. He is saying take time to know that you are not the center of the universe rather you are a part of the whole. Take time to know yourself as your really are and in this you will find humility and life that is completely foreign to this world.

I think of Paul’s similar words, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12).

If I were to analyze this verse, it would say, “Do not live as the world, with your mind focused on yourself and what you want, instead focus on others and see the world through the lens God might see through. Set your minds on life-giving pursuits that consist of people, nature, and intricacies unnoticed by most. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Be humble. Be self-aware, but not self-focused. Overcome your selfish, controlling and manipulative ways. In doing these things, you will be able to see more clearly and walk in a way that brings life to you and others—in this you will fulfill the will of God.”

Sometimes I wonder why I am so blessed to have an amazing family. This past weekend, my family met me in Spokane, WA, where I was taking an on-campus Masters course. It was like the olden days of traveling in the motorhome together. After my class, we went to Missoula, Montana and meet up with family friends--Uncle Les, Liberty and her husband, Craig. I'm so thankful for this fun memorable week and even mmore thankful for a supportive family. Big hugs to you!

Also, you will notice, fishing. I caught the fish and we ate them for breakfast. My dad caught a baby one, but we have to face the fact that I am a better fisherwoman. ;)

Women of Faith Conference on Friday Night-- I'm with Lisa Shirk, Marisa Woodcock and Christine Chapa.

A Poor Widow Changes the World

The other day, I was reading Mark 12:41 and couldn't seem to move on in my readings. So, I kept reading and reading and reading Mark 12:41- 44, multiple times. I can't say I have any “special enlightenment”, but I really love the fact that "Jesus sat down opposite of the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd put their money into the temple treasury". He just sat there and watched them. That's one of my favorite things to do.... sit and watch people. Its kind of neat that Jesus sat and watched people. It shows his personhood. Sometimes, we make Jesus this miracle-man who floats about two-inches above the ground. The fact that he sat and watched makes me feel identified with and that is a miracle in itself.

The story goes on, rich people put large amounts of money into the temple treasury and the poor widow put in a fraction of a penny. A fraction of a penny! Sometimes I throw pennies away because they annoy me---I decided not to throw them away anymore since a fraction of a penny has contributed to history in many ways (I will explain). ;) Anyways, Jesus says, the rich "gave out of their wealth; but she [the widow], out of her poverty, put in everything--- all she had to live on." Her very livelihood she put into the temple treasury.

The thing that gets me is that she put the money into the temple treasury. If I recall, Jesus wasn’t exactly excited about the happenings in the temple, so giving to the temple treasury doesn't seem to be his focus, rather, the hearts of men (and women) as they gave. The widow's heart gave to the treasury, not out of obligation or "shoulds" or out of wealth, but rather with her heart. She gave to God with her whole heart while the rich gave of their excess and duties. I’d like to raise my hand and say, “I want to be like the widow”-- to offer my livelihood to Jesus. I don’t’ want to hold onto a piece of myself, but rather I want to throw my life and heart at his feet. This is another example of dependency. Who are we depending on to provide for our lives? Are we storing our treasures in barns out of fear or are we giving with our hearts in confidence that God is our sufficiency?

As I talked about this particular passage of scripture with Bart, he told me that he just had a conversation with Doug about this very passage. Perfect. I asked him what Doug said and he had the most interesting insight. In fact, I was a little perturbed that I didn’t have the same insight. I got over it though and marveled at Doug’s ability to look at scripture and come away with an incredible understanding. Doug said, the interesting thing about the poor widow who gave a fraction of a penny is that she has raised the most money in history. Think about it. How many times have you heard this passage in church, Bible Studies and other services? This story has touched hearts all over the world, throughout the centuries, all because Jesus mentions her heart in the Bible and her fraction of a penny. She has helped to raise billions of dollars.

This kind of stuff is super neat to think about. Its amazing to think the status of my heart could contribute to history in a very tangible, legitimate way and this is not because of me, rather because of Jesus who is watching. He takes my heart, my little livelihood and can make much!

The Rich Young Ruler

Thoughts on the rich young ruler in Mark 10:17-29

The young man asks Jesus what he should do to inherit the kingdom and Jesus lists a bunch of commandments. Then, the young man replies, "I have done all these things."
Then, Jesus looks at him with love and says, "One thing you lack, go and sell everything you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. Then, come follow me."

The young man walked away sad because he had great wealth. Jesus tells his disciples, "It is harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom than a camel to go through the eye of a needle."

I think about this parable a lot because I don't think its so much about money, rather its about self-sufficiency. We depend on ourselves to get through life, but Jesus is asking us to depend only upon him. When I think of the rich young man, I think he walked away not because he loved all his stuff, but because it become his security, his adequacy and a reminder that he was sufficient. These are the things we must shed in order to follow Jesus because HE alone desires to be our security, our adequacy and our sufficiency. Jesus says, "it is hard to enter the Kingdom"-- which means, it is hard! But, I think the reward is greater than we know if we shed all of our self-sufficiency's.

A Professor's Post and a Child's Eyes

My professor wrote the follwing story in one of his papers-- I love the thoughts and words of his little girl.

My eldest daughter Natalya, six years old, came to me recently and sat on my lap while I was typing at the computer.
"Can I write a story?" she said. "You type it in, Daddy".
"Sure", I said, and holding her I typed the words. This is what she said:
"And sparkles came out of her eyes. And then she looked out the window and darkness clouds came out of the sky and then the next morning the sun came out and she was surprised, and she glimmered in beauty and long hair, she became the beautifullest, prettiest girl in town".

I am reminded of Jesus words, "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." We are to accept, hope and dream like children. Little children look past age, race, gender, and capabilities-- they see things pure and beautiful. Next time you see a child watch them-- their imaginations, their playfulness, their over-exaggerated emotions, their fear of discipline when they've been naughty, their eagerness to learn, observe and explore. Easily molded and impacted by the tiniest things. Its amazing! So care free, so focused on the moment, and engaged in the here & now.

I pray to become like a little child in my spirit and in the ways I see people.

Distance Magnifies Love

This past weekend, Two of my most favorite people in the world came to visit. The time we spent together will forever be treasured in my heart. At times, I despise the geographical distance between my family and me, but somehow the distance magnifies my love for them. Each moment I am with them, I realize the true gift of being together. This morning I woke up next to my sister and stared at her face; cherishing every line and every feature her face has imprinted upon it. It's a face I haven't seen nearly enough this past year. It's a face that I will hold dear to my heart for the rest of my life.
This past year, I have said goodbye to my sister many times and as we give each other our goodbye hugs, we cry, holding each other and wishing the moment of departure were not upon us. I watched as she and Jon faded into the chaos of the airport. Megan turned one last time to wave and my eyes took a snap shot of her to hold in my head for my car drive home. By the way, driving with tear filled eyes is not good-- I discovered this as I nearly merged into the car next to me. I came home to my empty room and cried some more. When your heart feels sad, you begin to wonder a lot of things. What am I doing here? Why am I living on the opposite side of the US? Has God really placed me here for a reason? I have to answer, yes. I sense with my spirit that I am supposed to be out here for now, but it doesn't relieve the void I feel right now. I am filled with hope to know that I will see clearly as time goes on as to why I am so far away from my family. In fact, there are glimpses here and there, but I am sure there is a larger view that I just don't see right now.
This is a sad post. I will share the fun stuff later-- after I am done being sad. ;)

I Wonder Why

This morning I continued to read Mark 8. In this passage, Jesus restores sight to a blind man.

22They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. 23He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, "Do you see anything?"
24He looked up and said, "I see people; they look like trees walking around."

25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26Jesus sent him home, saying, "Don't go into the village.[a]"

Today, I will walk around wondering about the following:

1) Why did Jesus spit, yes spit (ew) in the man's eyes? He could have touched him like the people asked, but he decided to spit! Why?
2) Why did Jesus gradually heal this man instead of healing him all at once? Moreover, why did the blind man see people that looked like trees walking around? Is there something significant to that?
3) When the, now, partially blind man was touched a second time, why didn't Jesus spit on his eyes again? He just touched him-- no spitting required. Interesting-- why? Also, why does Jesus ask if the man can see? Doesn't he know the man can't see yet?
4) Why did Jesus not want the man to go to the village? Was it because all the villagers would see that the blind man was healed and then chase Jesus down to either 1) kill Jesus or 2) ask him perform more healings? Did he not want to be known yet? Maybe he didn't want to be bugged?

Speaking of being bugged, the other night Doug Coe said, if we are the light of the world, then all the bugs of the world will be attracted to us. Which gave me understanding as to why I always have interesting encounters with rather odd people. ahahaha! I thought it was the greatest analogy. And I hope we are all being bugged!

Short Sighted

This morning I read Mark 8-- Jesus feeds four thousand people on seven loaves of bread. There are a few things about this story that strike me as particularly stunning about Jesus.

1) Jesus knows our needs and has compassion on his people-
After three days of teaching and sharing his life with people, he realizes the people must be hungry. He is filled with compassion and decides to feed them.

2) Jesus takes a little and makes a lot-
Jesus asks the disciples how many loaves of bread there are and they respond with, "seven". No doubt they are thinking, "lets get out of here with our seven loaves". But Jesus takes the seven loaves and begins to distribute. Oh wait! There's a few fish too! By the time all the food is distributed, there are left overs in the basket. Hello! Jesus takes a little and makes a lot!

3) Jesus knows his people are short-sighted, but he loves us anyway--
Further along in Mark 8, the disciples have a quivel over having only one loaf of bread. Jesus interrupts and says "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are you hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don't you remember? When I broke five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketful pieces did you pick up?"

Earlier, in Mark 6, Jesus had fed five thousand with five loaves. He did it again in Mark 8--- we are a short sighted people. When Jesus confronts the disciples about their trust and their short sightedness, he asks questions relating to understanding, condition of the heart, sight, hearing, and remembering His goodness. I want to seek those things and remember we serve an attentive, compassionate, faithful and trustworthy God. He knows and has the sight to see what we often fall short in seeing.

Desire

In light of my recent post about dreams, I have been thinking about desires. God gives us desires and dreams, however when those desires become the object of our motivation we begin to follow a false god. How do we live with our desires and dreams, yet submit to God? There seems to be a fine line in experiencing the freedom of our dreams and desires and submitting to the ways of a sovereign God.

Henri Nouwen offers some insights to the dynamics our desires, "Our desire for God is the desire that should guide all other desires. Otherwise our bodies, minds, hearts and souls become one another's enemies and our inner lives become chaotic, leading us to despair and self-destruction" (The Only Necessary Thing, p. 28). After reading a thought like this, we may decide to aim all our energies towards ridding ourselves of desires other than God, however Nouwen offers the thought of spiritual disciplines as a way to order our lives.

"Spiritual disciplines are not ways to eradicate all our desires but ways to order them so that they can serve one another and together serve God." Nouwen's thoughts on desire and spiritual discpline have challenged me to walk through my desires and ask the Lord for them to be aligned with his desires for my life. This is a discipline, not an eradication. Disciplines submits, while eradication controls. Submission softens us to the voice of God, while control hardens us to the leading of the Spirit of Jesus.

My Next Door Neighbors

The Wood's, my next door neighbors from Torrance, CA, came to visit me last week. We had a great time! I loved every moment we spent together. It's fun to think we've known each other since we were two-years old. Jonny and I reminisced about riding big wheels down steep hills, jumping fences to get candy from 7-11, and playing basketball-- shooting HORSE from the top of my roof.
Here we are all grown- up, but kids at heart!

Living the Dream

In the midst of work, friends, errands, bible studies and school it becomes easy to neglect the deepest longings of our heart and soul. They are longings that none of us can pinpoint or describe; they are pangs in our heart; senses of something more, something grand, something we need, but can’t grasp. These feelings arise at unexplainable and unexpected times. During certain seasons of our life we may feel detached from the deep longings, they become seemingly distant memories. But, sometimes the feelings are so real that we choose not to acknowledge them because... what do we do with these indescribable feelings anyway? Out of fear, we neglect our feelings because they can’t be put in a box. If the feelings were to unleash then we may not be able to control them. So, most people will simply greet the feelings for a moment; maybe get a warm fuzzy feeling of inspiration or possibly a deep saddening of reality......But, “Life goes on”. The years go by and there are moments in which we catch glimpses of these longings, but we usually just think of them as a “crazy thought” and continue “life”.

I have come to know these longings as the inner voice of love beckoning us to walk in the something more. The glimpses of something bigger are the dreams that God dreams for us. They are the dreams God has written on our heart. We yearn to walk in them, whether we acknowledge that or not. Are we too fearful to walk in them? What would happen if we were to become familiar with those feelings, the desires, the grand dreams?
What would happen if we did NOT let them pass us by?

A Portent
Last night was my first night back in my own bed after spending ten nights with an elderly woman. I was a caregiver for Barb, a woman who needed help as her husband was away in Africa. At the age of 75, she needs a moderate amount of assistance due to a stroke she suffered a couple years ago. Needless to say, the last ten days have been rather difficult, yet a true growing experience in sacrafice, submission and love.

Every night I would lay in bed and fight an inner battle in mind and heart. I wanted my agenda and my schedule back, but I knew my independence was to be sacraficed. For a few days, my ways and will were put to death for the sake of another. Could this be what it means to take up my cross? Could this be what it means to bear the burdens of another? Could this be what it means to take care of the poor, downcast and widows? Could this be what Paul meant when he said "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain"? In the midst of my processing, I knew that I was indeed experiencing something deeper than I knew. My giving, my dying and my pouring out is how I am called to live as a follower of Jesus. For a short time, I had to sacrafice my independence, my space, my will, my schedule, and my agenda. Isn't this what Jesus did when he gave up all his rights and perogatives to be among us and give himself on the cross? For me, it was ten days, for him it was his life.

My time with Barb has given me a deeper understanding of sacrafice, submission, and love.
Sacrafice is actually not a sacrafice because you will always have what you give to love (David Wilcox).
Submission is never learned with out something to actually submit, in this case, my personal independence.
Love is an action and its no small thing. Good intentions are not good enough, love is an action that requires all of you-- its not for the faint or half-hearted, it demands all and gives all.

In these past ten days, I have gained a renewed perspective on life. We are a solemn portent or testimony of an eternally loving God. Truly, we are dependent on Him for all things. As I watched Barb struggle to use her fork or unzip her purse, I was reminded that our control is an illusion. Not only that, but we are but a breath in the span of eternity-- our agendas, they are truly material for submission. We are withering flowers, here today and gone tomorrow. Our only hope is in Him because although "we are wasting away outwardly, we are being renewed inwardly" (2 Cor. 4:16).

New Year's was spent with some of my favorite people; my parents, sister, Chris and Jess. We ate tacos, drank cranberry juice and champagne, then played Nerts (the best card game ever). Megan had to work the next day, so we celebrated New Year's according to East Coast time and then sent Megan home. Jess, Chris and I proceeded with festivities at Feather Falls Casino. I have to admit, I was highly disappointed initially. But, then we ended up checking out the poker room. Although, I have never played poker before, I did on New Year's--- at the table with the "big timers"-- BooYaa! ;)
Chris paid the $40 buy in and I walked away with $53, that means I won $13....yeah! Big winner, right here!

Christmas and Family

This Christmas Season we received the special gift of family. My Aunt Janet, Uncle Bill, Cousins Tony and Steve came to Chico for a day and then we spent Christmas Eve with them in Roseville. It was a special and fun time. I am thankful for our time together and look forward to visiting Tennessee to see them.

Micah's funeral was this past Friday. It was a very memorable service at the Rosecrans Cemetary in San DIego, CA. The car ride to the funeral was the hardest because inside I knew that nothing could make me feel better-- he is gone and he would not be at his own funeral. Something inside wants there to be one more time to see him and hug him, but there are only the memories. I love this picture of him, but I despise it also because the foreign landscape in this picture is where my friend, Micah, had his life taken from him. Its funny how you miss someone when they are gone for good. I haven't seen him for two years and right now, now that he is gone, I miss him.

A Sad Day

Today was a sad day. A couple days ago, my friend Nickie called to tell me that our friend Micah Gifford died in Iraq. His truck was hit by a bomb. He was only there for eight weeks and it ended his life. The world seems to pause at times like these. Its hard to think about his existence as no more. His being, his presence, his personality, his smile, and hilarious ways will never be known to anyone in the flesh ever again.

High school feels like it was yesterday-- for some reason it seems like yesterday we were riding bikes, running on the track, and going out after football games.
But, I haven’t seen him in two years. He came to Chico to visit me at Lifescapes. When he came to visit, he had recently moved to Redding and it was a wonderful discovery to know that we lived so close to each other. I can still remember our walk down Longfellow Road. We talked about Jesus and love, and our call to love people as Jesus did. We talked about the power of loving as Jesus loved. It was a profound talk and it encouraged me. As we departed that day, I never thought it would be the last time I spent with him. He was on his way to a Mexico for a mission trip, which he was really excited about. He was working for a telephone book company--- he was in Chico for "work". ;)

I can’t seem to stop crying today. I feel a deep sadness. I know that I’ll see him again. I know that he has all the answers to the questions we pondered about God, Jesus, the world, people, denominations, and church. It brings me joy to know that he KNOWS. He has met our Truth, face to face. My tears are because I will miss him. I will miss his humor, his laughter, his sarcasm, his heart, his determined spirit and probing thoughts. I will miss thinking about what he is doing and what he will become. I will miss him at our high school reunion in June. Micah was the icon of our high school class….there is and will be a huge gap with out him. It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday. (Micah, Joe and Brian sang this at our high school graduation)

Mt. Hermon and my hair!

Yes, my hair is red. Yes, I hate it. Yes, I am getting it fixed in two weeks-- hopefully.

I went to CA for a few days....stopped by Chico long enough to devastate my hair.

On a different note, had a great time at Mt. Hermon with friends. The Wesley's, The Wilhelm's, The Tricerri's and I stayed in a cabin together....yes, I was the 7th wheel and loved every minute of it. Why? Because i love being with married people and especially these married people. My friend, Vyria, came the second and third night....so things were even. ;) Side note: I saw Sarah and Kyle for the first time in a year! I love them! I want to be like them and travel the world.

Truly, the weekend was a gift. Amazing! I was able to completely disconnect from the everything and thoroughly enjoy my friends, the beach, the mountains and redwoods.

Long BUT good ...

If they know of him at all, many folks think Ben Stein is just a quirky actor/comedian who talks in a monotone. He's also a very intelligent attorney who knows how to put ideas and words together in such a way as to sway juries and make people think clearly.

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.

Herewith a few confessions from my beating heart: I have no freaking clue who Nick and Jessica are. I see them on the cover of People and Us constantly when I am buying my dog biscuits and kitty litter. I often ask the checkers at the grocery stores. They never know who Nick and Jessica are either. Who are they? Will it change my life if I know who they are and why they have broken up? Why are they so important? I don't know who Lindsay Lohan is either, and I do not care at all about Tom Cruise's wife. Am I going to be called before a Senate committee and asked if I am a subversive? Maybe, but I just have no clue who Nick and Jessica are. If this is what it means to be no longer young. It's not so bad.

Next confession: I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees. It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution, and I don't like it being shoved down my throat. Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But thereare a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let something lik e this Happen?" (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?" In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school . the Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK. Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK. Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW." Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and thenwonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but questionwhat the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and theyspread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgarand obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussionof God is suppressed in the school and workplace. Are you laughing?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, orwhat they will think of you for sending it. Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us. Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought
process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

We also ran into our friend Russ, who leads the UCLA fan club--- needless to say, he hates USC. It was fun to have a little competition in the room-- too bad I wont be in town this upcoming Sat. to battle it out with him during the USC vs. UCLA game.

This past weekend my friend Genessa came to visit. She is one of my best friends from Seattle. Sometimes I am amazed that we have remained close even though we only knew each other for about six months.

When Genessa got into town we came back to my house, chatted, and then decided to go Country Dancin'. It was great. We met up with some friends and attempted to line dance, waltz, and two-step. I think the best song of the night was Sweet Home Alabama. Practically everyone got on the dance floor and we met a new friend, Mike, who has a Jeep Wrangler (which happens to be my dream car).

Saturday night we went bowling-- I'd like to add, I bowled a 130 (all time high for me). My friends,Hilary and Jess got to meet Genessa. It makes me so happy when good friends get to meet my other good friends--- sometimes I wish I could rally everyone up and introduce people.
After bowling we met up with my roommates, Belen and Anne Marie, in Georgetown and went to a club called The Guards. We danced and met some people from Belen's work and Anne Marie's MA program.

Sunday came and went. Today we are headed to the Outlet Malls and then I drop Genessa off.

The weekend went by quickly.

This morning I woke up, studied, greeted roommates, started laundry, and then I stepped out the door to a strikingly beautiful day. North Arlington, Virginia is one of the most beautiful places in the Washington DC vicinity. I wish pictures could capture the beauty of this place. I wish words could capture the beauty of this place. Its not the kind of beauty I usually speak of, rather, its a beauty that stems from community, people, homes and neighborhoods. As I walked to the post office through neighborhoods of families, I realized there is something overwhelmingly amazing about neighborhoods, family, friends, children playing, doors and windows open, yard work, coffee on the front porch and all this mixed with nature; Squirrels running around, tall stretched trees reaching to the sky with brilliantly colored leaves and a bright sun that warms the skin. Why are these things so beautiful? It's harmony. It's all of God's creation in perfect sync and rejoicing---it’s the language that speaks of the work of his hands and the glory of God. I love it! It's a glimpse of heaven. It is heaven, little piece of his glorious Kingdom on earth! Truly, in these things, His greatness is revealed.

Tonight a bunch of us went Country Dancin'!!!! Truly, we had a blast and I think some of us are gonna take up line dancin'. If we get partners, we might go to the Country Dance Competition in December! ;) Just kidding. But really, country dancin is awesome!

I danced with Tim most of the time, he's fifty-one and he liked me cuz I could follow really well. Mom, I don't think he was a weirdo...just a good ole boy! ;) He liked to fling me around and spin me on the floor. Check out the pics.

Mother Theresa said, “You can do no great things, just small things with great love”.
I love the simplicity and truth of those words. Although these words resonate with my soul, do I really believe them? This question has been like a resounding gong in my head. Do I really believe that Jesus uses the mundane? Do I really believe God uses mere human beings? Do I really believe that Jesus transcends age, race, gender, religion, politics and policy? There is a difference between beliefs and believing. Although I haven’t studied “beliefs” and “believing”, it seems to me that beliefs are a set of values or understandings. Beliefs can be stagnant or simply just there, while believing is active and alive. Am I active and alive?

Believing doesn’t necessarily take a trip to Africa. It doesn’t mean we necessarily work for a ministry. It doesn’t mean we start a non-profit to feed the poor. It doesn’t mean we start a revolution. Rather, believing means we trust who God says we are and we take action as his ambassadors in even the small things…and do them with great love.

In Washington D.C., I sit at a desk most of the day doing administrative tasks, such as writing emails, scheduling events, answering phones, taking messages, accounting, etc. The funny thing is that I like it for the most part. Sure, there are days when I wonder what I am doing, but for right now this is where I am on my journey. In all the administrative tasks that seem so little or mundane at times, I want to do them with great love. Why do I want to do them with great love? Because I believe it’s a little stone, it’s a little mortar, it's a little seed, it’s a little water in the hearts of the sons and daughters—this Kingdoms coming.

Friends, thanks so much for your prayers, encouragement and support while I have been in Washington D.C. Many of you have visited in the past nine months and I have been so blessed to be with you. For those of you in Chico, I will be home December 16- January 3rd and I would love to get together with all of you to talk about my time on the East Coast. There is far too much to be said over email—but I would love to talk with you on the phone or around Christmas. Know that I think about you and I pray for each one when I think of you. I am eager to hear what is going on in your lives….

Some fun things:
My parents came to Washington DC for a couple weeks this past month. They stayed in a basement apartment near by the Tarman’s house (people I work with). They were able to see what my life is like in Washington DC. My dad was able to tour the monuments and museums till his heart was content. It was a very memorable time and I cherish it.
My Birthday was October 7 and my friends planned a surprised party. I was completely surprised…unbelievable.
Many friends have visited in the past few months.
Every week I help an older couple, Dick and Barbara Simmons, with their accounting. It has been a huge blessing to be with them and listen to their heart for Jesus.
A friend from High School moved out to DC, Mike Lawson. We have fun together. It has been fun to re-unite and share the same circle of friends.
I went to Boston a few weeks ago with some friends that flew me up simply to hangout and see the sights. Very fun!
A group of us have been planning a gathering for young people in our community, which I am so excited about. It will start November 7 and go for six weeks.
I have moved it with new roommates. Anne Marie Smith from Texas and Belen Coe from Annapolis, VA. I couldn't have asked for better roommates.
A trip to Seattle in July for the Tarman Team Meeting--- it was great to meet the Tarman's friends. Also, i was able to spend time with my friends for a few days before the Tarman retreat.

California- I love it! Going home is one of the greatest things in the world. It's a place where you can kick your feet up and know that you are loved no matter what. Its a place where everyone knows your greatest strength and greatest weakness and it doesn't matter, you are loved simply because you are!

On Friday night, Jess and I were wondering what to do with the evening---- if you can't tell from the picture, I am dressed up as the Univeristy of Kentucky Mascot. That's right, I'm the wildcat in the middle of Jess and Michelle. We visited a lot of people on Friday night and it was hilarious!!!!

One of my friends is a mascot for the Wizards (NBA) and the Mystics (WNBA). He has lots of crazy mascot outfits. I'll add another picture, so you can see Matt in a mascot outfit at the WNBA game a couple months ago.

Fun Weekend and a Special Visitor!

This past weekend was so fun!

First, it started with Chris coming to town. Sometimes I can't believe that people want to visit me, but I suppose some credit goes to the fact that I live in DC. Our Nation's Capitol is truly amazing and I am so grateful for the opportunity to live here and build community with a wonderful group of people.

Chris was able to meet many of my friends--I love when different circles of friends connect. The night Chris arrived, we made dinner with Jess then we picked up Trent from the airport. Chris pretended to be from Australia (with an accent) and Trent believed us until we told him the truth. It was hilarious!!!

Friday and Saturday night we went dancing. It was a blast! You can see the pictures below. We weren’t planning to dance on Sat., but my friends Jairo and Anna had a wedding reception at the park near the Cedars (they got married in Costa Rica) and afterward everyone went to Georgetown.

There is something about those lyrics that puts me in my place. Putting things in perspective can change my life, my attitude and it humbles me. When I stand before an all-consuming, powerful, and awesome God, my perspective is reordered. Everyday, I awaken to a world that points to self as the answer and every morning it is my desire to re-orient myself to the source that is greater.

Why do I do this? I do this because the Love of my God compels me to move toward him and walk in a way, which honors Him; because walking according to the ways of “self” sacrifices God’s ways, which are high above my ways. I have heard people say that we are to sacrifice our lives to God, but I never really understood that statement. We don’t sacrifice anything because in giving ourselves we actually find life and find our true self--- the way God intended us to be. Everyday I want to walk in this light and be the light.

Tonight I'm sitting on my front door stairs in the middle of Arlington, Virginia. An orchestra compiled of crickets, locusts, birds, and my neighbors piano join together to sing me a song. The warmth of the day has settled and a slight breeze sweeps across my face, whisping my hair out of my eyes. The fireflies beam brightly just above the green grass and I am reminded of childhood firefly hunts in Nebraska. The blue sky above turns purple as I look westward; the purple turns to dark blue with hot pink accents melding into the setting sun. As I gaze upward, I see the treetops dance in the wind as if they’re able to hear the same song as me. All creation is singing, shouting, stretching and praising Him right now and I will partake in the praise. The enchantment of tonight is alluring and captivating to my soul. All I can do is sit here, looking up into the open sky and think about the gift of this experience and the gift of life. I get to witness and testify that all creation acknowledges Him. Yet, in the midst of all this, I am reminded that this is not my home. Although this experience seems so unique in the moment, it is all too familiar at the same time. I hear a whisper in my being that says, “there is more”. As I relish in those words, I am brought to tears because inside I know, the more, is my home.

June, what a month! I have been blessed with great friends.

First, David Lim came to town and that was flash back! We still are goofy together---nerd and nerdier (what we like to call ourselves).

I moved out of the poolhouse and into a house a couple miles away from my place of work. Then, I went home to Torrance, California to visit my Papa and Yaya for a few days. My time with Papa and Yaya was great! I miss them so much and feel blessed to have grandparents as loving and encouraging as them. Not only, did I get good time with Papa and Yaya, I also spent time with friends:

Amber, Alison, Melinda, and Johnny- We all grew up together (next door neighbors). It's strange that even though we don't keep in the best contact, we can always step into each others lives without any awkward tensions (except Johnny trying to kiss me..;) Jk...I love him!

Kate, Mike, Johnny and I went to the Rivera for dinner and then rode bikes to Hermosa Beach.

The next day I went to the AVP at Hermosa Beach--- Katy Butler and I met up with Nickie Sherman. It was great to see Hudson, Katy and Matt's new son! He is so precious, cute and amazing! I love him.
Nickie and I went to Breakfast the next morning...she is doing well and dating a really great guy, Bobby. I loved every moment with them and am excited about what the future hold for them. ;)

My mom and sister drove down from Chico to pick me up and bring me Chico.

My heart still throbs for Chico and California in general. I suppose it always will because the people I dearly love are there. There is something that fits right when I am at home--- Megan, Jon and me always have so much fun! They truly are my best friends! I love being with them. Mego and Jon, I love you so much and miss you everyday!!!!!!!

A Special Surprise!

Yesterday I was in Washington and today I am in Chico, CA!

I have always wanted to be one of those people with a great surprise story and last night I became one of them.

My mom has been in and out of the hospital with cancer problems; she had her thyroid removed last week. Wednesday was her birthday and I thought it would be wonderful to fly back to Chico as a surprise. Being that Bart and Linda are in Ecuador, it made sense as far as work goes--- so, I began to look into possibilities. Unfortunately, the flights were very expensive, so I decided against it. Then, Linda got in touch with her sister, an airline stewardess, and I got companion passes.

With all that said, I took at 6pm non-stop flight from DC and arrived last night at 8:40pm. On the way back from the airport Megan and I discussed how we would surprise mom. We had an idea, but when we walked in the door, my dad had an idea too, so we went with my dad's idea.

He went into kiss my mom goodnight and he kissed her, then he said "Wouldn't you like a good kiss goodnight?" and then I popped in the room and said "From Me". My mom was freaked out and so excited. We hugged and hugged and hugged and hugged. She had NO idea.

So, that is my surprise story. Thanks for reading about my special time with my family.

Washington Life, School, Work, Friends and Kicked Out of the Poolhouse

This past week has been epicly eventful in a hectic and emotional sort of way.

1) I had a paper due, so most of my background thoughts were consumed with the fact that I should be writing a paper.

2) Work is good, as usual. I love Bart and Linda. Holding down the fort is one of my specialties and it seems that they like me to hold down the fort, so we are a good fit.
Fitting into the work area, taxes. I got my taxes done today. Just in the nick of time and I have a refund comin', which makes the world seem a little better.

3) My friends in DC are great! We have a ton of fun. Fun is usually consisting of going to get something to eat and then a drive around the city.

4) Michelle and I are kicked out of the poolhouse as of the end of April. I shouldn't say we are "kicked out" because we have been given two extra months in the poolhouse. Plus, everyone is helping us look for a place to live in the area.

With all that said, things are going well.

Abie Curry is my friend. She is here in Washington DC with me right now. We are having fun! She is a true Nabber of the nugget! If only we all had nabber skills like abber.
She is truly a phenomenon.

Jen Ronconi is better than macaroni. Her heart is like a fluttering little flutter. Don't make her laugh or she will flutter away. She wants to out nab abber, but so far all she can get is macaroni.

If you don't get this then you need to inspect your underwear and label them with your number. Then I will find you.

Let's Try Again

So, my last post was over a month ago! Posting blogs is not that difficult, however finding time to post is very difficult. With that said, I am going to try and post more often, which means I will MAKE time.

Right now I am in a really cool coffee shop called 'Murky Coffee'. It's the coolest spot in town, in my opinion. It's nearly three stories tall and its really old and they have free wireless internet, so every person has a laptop...literally. And I noticed that everyone downstairs is of the male race. I think there are a lot of men who use this location as their office. If you ever visit me, I will show you Murky Coffee.

One of the most annoying things happened a minute ago....here at Murky Coffee. These men decided to take over the entire table, he literally say right across from me and is trying to get me to move. WELL, guess what, I am still sitting here. yep, I am and I'm not moving either.

Korean Karaoke

So, Last night was Korean Karaoke and it was a blast. Before the singing we decided to eat Korean food and it was soooo good!!! I definately encourage everyone to try Korean food.

A bunch of people from Georgia invited me to Karaoke with them. Hopefully, we will do it again soon.

Saturday was a beautiful day!

Things are getting crazy in DC as the NPB approaches!! Starting tomorrow there will be 3800 guests, 600 internationals, from 180 countries! Please be praying for us as we build relationships in the name of Jesus with people from all over the world.

This past weekend I went to the monuments with some Chico folks (working at the Cedars). It is an absolute blessing to be able to walk the mall of monuments whenever I want to....I am really loving DC!

I arrived in Washington DC a little under two weeks ago. My parents and I approached the pool house of the Cedars (where I am living) and there was a sign on the door that read "Welcome Home Amber!" My roommate, Michelle, warmly welcomed me and I am very thankful for her. Michelle is from Seattle, WA and she has been in DC for about four months (I think?). Being that she has been around the joint for a bit longer, she knows a lot of people and has included me in her circle of friends. Thanks Michelle! You are the best!

Washington DC is Washington DC. I really don't have much to say yet about my feelings, thoughts, etc because I haven't been here that long. I am big on processing until I arrive at the most accurate descriptions of my feelings. Until I have pondered a bit longer, know that I like it here. The people are wonderful and I find myself in awe of Jesus as he continually shows his love to me in undeserving ways.

When I moved back to Chico two and half years ago I imagined I would stay for awhile, but when this job in Washington DC was brought to my attention I couldn't resist. At the beginning of January I will be packing up my car and driving 3,000 miles to our Nation's Capital. I am so excited and feel blessed to have such an opportunity. It's hard to leave friends, family and work, but I know that there is something special for me in Washington DC.

I will be working for Bart and Linda Tarman. Bart used to be the Chaplain at Westmont College in Santa Barbara and now he is a pastor at large. Basically, he and Linda have a ministry to people in Latin America, but they also have been walking with some US legislators in DC. They have a large circle of relationships and I will be helping them maintain those relationships. It will be fun to coordinate their ministry and be apart of their team.

In addition to a new job and location, I am working on my Masters of Organizational Leadership through Gonzaga University. My first class was great, I got an A. YESSS! My current class is Servant Leadership, it’s awesome!! The work load is hard to get used to, but I love the books I read and the discussions with my online classmates.

Overall, life is good and God is doing some profound things. I am learning to trust him more and in the midst of all these changes I am more aware of His grace. I read in a book, Blue Like Jazz, that grace is the charity of God. It seems I am becoming more aware of my dependance on His charity.

Shooting in Washington DC

I went out to Washington DC a few weekends ago to visit Sarah & Kyle and my friend Mitch. I was also met with Tarman's who I will be working with in January.

This is a picture of me-- packin' heat!!! ;) My friend Mitch took me trap shooting...I thoroughly enjoyed it! In fact, I would love to take shooting lessons.

My time in DC was great, but this particular event will always stick out in my memory!!! If anyone would like to visit me in DC, I can take you trap shooting.
